Barbara Sexton ’22

September 7, 2023

Barbara Sexton, 58, is an Army spouse, mother, and grandmother who earned her bachelor’s in business through SNHU’s employer partnership with Walmart. Barbara is the proud mother of four sons, including 21-year-old Jacob who died by suicide in 2009 while on a 15-day leave from a deployment to Afghanistan. She and her family helped pass the Jacob Sexton Military Suicide Prevention Act signed into federal law in 2014, requiring all members of the military to receive annual mental health assessments. Barbara says prior to his tragic death, Jacob spent his time at home collecting coats to bring back to Afghanistan after noticing the children there were in need. Jacob’s compassion toward the children in Afghanistan inspired Barbara to earn her SNHU degree and pursue a career with a nonprofit to give back the way he did.
